The second and lower layer of skin, called our dermis, is responsible for giving us our pigment called melanin. When overstimulated, it can cause excess pigmentation.
The overstimulation of melanin can be caused by excess sun exposure and/or hormonal changes and certain medications. This is the brown discolouration some see on the cheeks, chin, forehead and upper lip.
Sun exposure is the number one cause of pigmentation, as it’s sunlight that triggers the production of melanin in the first place. Melanin acts as your skin’s natural sunscreen by protecting you from harmful UV rays, which is why people tan in the sun.
But excessive sun exposure can disrupt this process, leading to hyperpigmentation.
Hormonal influences are the main cause of a kind of hyperpigmentation known as melasma or chloasma. It’s particularly common among women, as it’s thought to occur when the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone stimulate the overproduction of melanin when skin is exposed to the sun.
Here at Evolution Laser Clinic, we offer several pigment-reduction treatments that can rejuvenate the skin’s appearance. We target superficial pigment and dermal pigment whilst reversing the visible signs of sun damage and ageing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What treatment options are available for pigmentation removal?
At Evolution Laser, we offer several options for pigment reduction. Our treatments target superficial and dermal pigment, and each treatment option, from laser pigment reduction, skin needling and pigment peels to our Ultimate Brightening Serum, is designed to rejuvenate the skin, as well as help reverse the visible signs of sun damage and ageing.
Can laser treatment remove pigmentation permanently?
Pigmentation that has been removed by laser treatment should not return after treatment has been completed, provided the skin is appropriately taken care of. During treatment, the superficial pigmentation lesions absorb the laser energy and rise to the surface of the skin. Two to three days after treatment, the lesions will start to dry and flake off, leaving you with clear and even-toned skin within fourteen days.
Results and recovery timelines can vary, which is why a consultation is important to assess suitability and set realistic expectations.
Does laser pigmentation removal work for all skin types?
At Evolution Laser Clinic, laser pigment reduction and removal are generally offered for fairer skin tones classified as Fitzpatrick Skin Types 1, 2 and 3. According to the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA), the Fitzpatrick scale is widely used in dermatology to describe how skin reacts to sun exposure.
Research from the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology suggests that Fitzpatrick Skin Types 1 to 3 are often considered more suitable for laser pigment treatments because there is typically less competing melanin in the surrounding skin. This can reduce the likelihood of unwanted pigment changes after treatment.
- Skin Type 1: Very fair skin, always burns, never tans
- Skin Type 2: Fair skin, usually burns, tans minimally
- Skin Type 3: Light to medium skin, may burn, gradually tans
Darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick Types 4 to 9) may be more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, which is why an individual consultation is essential to determine the safest treatment approach.
How do I choose the right pigmentation reduction treatment for me?
At Evolution Laser Clinic, we offer several solutions for pigmentation reduction. The right treatment for you will depend on a number of factors, including your desired result. As with all of our skin treatment options, we suggest you book a complimentary consultation with us to talk over your unique needs. Our friendly and professional team will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
How many pigmentation treatments will I need to see results?
For laser pigmentation reduction, three treatments is generally ideal for optimal results. However, further treatments may be required for higher levels of pigmentation. For skin needling, six to ten treatments are usually required. Pigment peels can be performed at fortnightly or monthly intervals.
Are skin pigmentation removal treatments painful?
This depends somewhat on the type of treatment. With laser pigment reduction, it is common to experience a little discomfort due to the heat from the laser. With skin needling, some may find the sensation unfamiliar but not uncomfortable, while some may prefer to use a numbing cream prior to treatment. With skin peels, it is common to experience a slight tingling or stinging sensation for a few minutes while the peel does its work.
During your consultation, our therapists will explain what to expect before, during and after laser reduction for pigmentation, including potential sensations, recovery time and possible side effects.
We also provide personalised aftercare instructions, which may include guidance on sun protection, gentle skincare use and what to do if you experience ongoing redness, sensitivity or irritation. Individual responses vary, and our team is here to support you throughout the process.
