Marionette Lines

Book Your Complimentary Consultation

Marionette lines, also known as smile lines, become more pronounced when the skin is dehydrated. Evolution Laser Clinic provides a non-surgical solution to smile lines, designed to restore volume, replenish moisture and help create a smoother, more youthful appearance.

Schedule an initial consultation today to discover whether you’re a suitable candidate for our smile lines treatment.

What causes marionette lines

Marionette lines are the vertical folds that run from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin, resembling the lines seen on a marionette puppet. These creases may become more prominent due to natural ageing and external factors.

As we age, the body produces less collagen and elastin, the essential proteins that keep the skin firm and plump. As their levels decline, the skin stretches, loses volume and develops fine lines.

While ageing is the primary cause, prolonged sun exposure, smoking and certain repetitive facial expressions can contribute to the early appearance of these creases. Dry or dehydrated skin can also accentuate fine lines and wrinkles, making them appear more pronounced.

Who can benefit from the treatment

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Are in good overall health.
  • Do not smoke.
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcome of the treatment.
  • Are committed to following proper aftercare guidelines.

This treatment may not be recommended for individuals with are:

  • Currently pregnant or nursing
  • Have epilepsy, cancer, porphyria or enzyme-related disorders.
  • Have known allergies or sensitivities to ingredients such as latex, lidocaine or hyaluronic acid.
  • Have an autoimmune condition or a tendency to develop keloid scars.

Our process

During your first consultation, our skin therapists will assess your skin condition, including the extent of dryness and fine lines. We will also review your medical history, including any medications you’re taking. This thorough evaluation helps ensure that the treatment is safe and suitable for your needs.

If you’re an eligible candidate, we’ll create a bespoke treatment plan based on your skin concerns and goals. We’ll explain what happens before, during and after the process and address any precautions so you feel confident moving forward.

Risks and side effects

As with any cosmetic treatment, there are potential risks involved with marionette lines treatment. These include:

  • Bleeding, itching, redness or swelling in the treatment site
  • Bruising
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Herpes simplex virus infection (cold sores)
  • Abscess or cellulitis
  • Mycobacterial infection
  • Foreign body granuloma
  • Dyspigmentation
  • Scarring

While most reactions are mild and temporary, some individuals may be more prone to complications. It’s important to monitor for any persistent or unusual symptoms and seek assistance promptly if they worsen or do not resolve.

Post-care

Follow these post-treatment guidelines to minimise the risk of discomfort and complications:

  • Do not apply makeup for the rest of the day to prevent irritation.
  • Stay away from high-heat sources such as hot showers, saunas, steam rooms and direct sun exposure for 24 hours.
  • Avoid cosmeceuticals with active ingredients like AHAs, retinol or vitamin C for at least one week.
  • Limit strenuous physical activity and exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid alcohol for at least six hours after treatment.
  • Do not take blood thinners such as aspirin or NSAIDs for several days. If you are on blood-thinning medication for medical reasons, inform your provider before treatment and follow your doctor’s advice.
  • Refrain from touching, massaging or scrubbing the injection sites for at least four hours post-treatment.
  • Sleep on your back, and do not apply pressure to the treated area for two weeks.

Note that the effects of the treatment can vary from person to person, depending on factors such as skin type, age, metabolism and lifestyle habits. Additionally, the body’s ability to absorb and process the treatment itself, along with hormonal changes and individual healing responses, may further influence the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you treat marionette lines?

Our non-surgical treatment helps replenish hyaluronic acid to improve skin texture, hydration and facial volume, potentially reducing the appearance of marionette lines. Each treatment plan is customised to align with your skin type, facial structure and aesthetic goals.

How often do you need marionette lines treatment?

The timing for touch-up treatments depends on individual objectives and the longevity of the results. In most cases, results may last anywhere from six to 12 months or longer. Our registered nurses will provide a bespoke treatment plan that best suits your skin needs during your complimentary consultation.

It’s important to note that while this treatment can soften the appearance of deeper lines, it may not eliminate them entirely. Instead, it works to help make them less noticeable over time.

Can marionette lines be corrected naturally?

While lifestyle habits and skincare can support skin health and slow the progression of marionette lines, these may not completely get rid of smile lines. A combination of prescribed skincare products and professional treatments can help reduce their appearance and support overall skin rejuvenation.
